Shoe Storage for the Laundry Room (and inexpensive too)

Hi there!

After my last post about our daughter's birthday party, I wasn't sure what I would blog about next. A lot of the spaces in our home are "done" and I don't have any big reveals planned. I do have a few ideas of posts for the future of little projects, but after over 3 years of living in our home, there won't be any huge reveals (unless we hit the lottery or something...haha).

However, today I do want to share a good shoe storage option we recently have been using in our laundry room.

To really appreciate the organization, I'll share what we were using as shoe storage before all this.

Yikes!!
Our old cube storage was clearly not functional anymore (it had been a good 7 year run) and was breaking in a few spots.
I originally thought I would just get another one and ended up buying Target's Room Essential storage brand, thinking we would use it. BUT...

then my oldest daughter and I, one afternoon after dance class, ran some errands at Wal-Mart next door. We decided to peruse the storage section and stumbled upon their Better Homes and Garden line. Now, I don't know about you, but I have actually been pretty impressed with their stuff. We've bought a few home items from that line and once I saw their shoe storage options, I thought we'd give it a try.

Good bye old broken shoe storage!!

We ended up buying 2 of these BH&G's boxes for 3 reasons:

1. We wanted plenty of storage for our shoes (preferably more than what we had before)
2. They are stackable which gives added height to this space and more cubbies to place our shoes.
3. The price ($20 each)

Even in buying two of these guys, we saved $20 over Target's cubbies, so I ended up returning that one.

Our laundry room is now looking a bit more organized!

Our girls boots even fit in the cubbies which ended up being an added bonus!

So I'd say if you are on the hunt for some shoe storage that not only looks nice but it pretty inexpensive, take a look at BH&G's selection at Wal-Mart. It won't disappoint!

FYI- in no way am I being paid by Wal-Mart for this post. I just wanted to happily share an inexpensive option for shoe storage. :)

Gray Painted Dresser

Hello, hello!!

I am so excited to share with you all today one of my newest furniture make-overs!
I recently made over a thrift store dresser that was in need of some T.L.C. and I love the outcome.
It did take me some time to work on it because I was either sanding, painting, building, etc. during our daughter's naps or on the weekends. But it is finally done and I am so pleased with the turn-out.

Check out that side bookshelf!!
I made it and added it to the side of the dresser so it can hold little books and magazines. :)
I love it! It adds personality to an otherwise plain dresser.

I lined the shelves with some green and white paper I purchased at Home Goods.

And as a little reminder, here is what the dresser looked like before the make-over:

I painted some detail on the front of the dresser to add more character and also added some moulding to the top of the dresser to jazz it up a bit.

This baby has some deep drawers too....it can hold a lot of stuff!
It is for sale right now and looking for a good home.

Oh, and in case you are wondering where I found my inspiration for this dresser, it came from this website:

Painted Sideboard

Hello there!

How was your weekend?
Ours was pretty good actually...we spent a lot of it running errands and hanging out with friends. It was a good weekend but it always seems to go by too quickly!

Anyways, I wanted to share with you all a sideboard I recently painted and sold!
The day I posted about the sideboard I was contacted by a lady who wanted to purchase it...I wasn't expecting an offer that quickly, but it worked out and I am actually a little sad that we don't have it in our home anymore.
It was a very pretty sideboard and very well-made...sometimes that is hard to come by!

Here are some of the pictures I took of it after it was painted and styled.

Here is what this piece use to look like before I painted it and distressed it a little bit.

And here is another after photo.

I was very pleased with the turn-out/end result and miss this piece a little bit...but I know there are more great pieces out there to find and that is a little exciting!

I have another piece in the works right now...a dresser.
It is almost finished and once it is done, I will post some pictures.
Thanks for stopping by!

Some New Pieces

Hi everyone!
Can't believe it is Thursday already!!

Whew...the days just seem to be flying by...funny how that works as you get older.

Well, I wanted to share with you some new pieces I have been working on.

I got both of these pieces at a thrift store in the area that I love to visit...this particular thrift store ALWAYS has great furniture...seriously...most of it just needs a little T.L.C.

To start, I bought this sideboard that needs a little love...and some paint of course.
It doesn't look it in the photo, but the top has a few dings and scratches.

This dresser is a pretty sturdy piece, but as you can see, it needs some work.
It did come with the drawers...but I just didn't take a picture of it all put together.
The drawers slide very well and the middle drawers are very deep which was a great find!

I have plans for both pieces and am I am pretty excited about getting them done.
Hopefully, the sideboard will be complete this weekend and I will be able to post pictures of it soon. :)

Hope you all have a wonderful Thursday!

DIY Ladder

Let it be known that for years I have always wanted one of those storage ladders in our home.

Okay...

Maybe I haven't been wanting one for years, but years ago before we moved into our first home, I saw these ladders in a friends home and really loved the look and the storage space that they provided. She had the realllly nice ladders too...the ones from Crate and Barrel that are super-de-dooper expensive. You know what I am talking about, right?

We also tried looking at Kohl's during their after-Thanksgiving sale a few years ago but the ladders we saw were still over-priced...so we never purchased one.

I just couldn't justify spending hundreds of dollars on a storage ladder and so I am glad we never bought one.

I made one recently and it turned out pretty good. And, I will add, it was free to make, basically. I just used some leftover things we had lying around (you know how that goes) and Voila, we had ourselves a pretty stylish and cute ladder...if I do say so myself!

Okay, so here are the tools I used and the supplies I used for this project:

Pretty basic, right?

I used our handy-dandy drill with drill bits, spare wood, liquid nails, a gray antiquing glaze, saw to cut the wood down to size, and a tape measure.

That's it!

It took me a couple of tries to figure out how I was going to keep the smaller, thinner wood pieces attached to the bigger wood pieces...but eventually I came up with a plan of drilling holes into the sides of the wood so the thinner pieces of wood would sit inside the holes you see in the pictures above and below.

To make sure everything was secure, I also took some Liquid Nails and filled the holes with it just so the other thin strips of wood would sit and stay tightly.

Once everything was pretty dry, I went ahead and put some blankets and decor magazines on the ladder and snapped a few pictures.

I love it so much...it adds just the right amount of storage and it gives that area, that was once blank, a purpose.

What do you think about those Crate and Barrel ladders? Would you ever make your own?

A Quick Nightstand Redo

Hi there!

Have you been getting hit by this crazy cold weather?
Man...one day it will be breezy and in the mid-60's here and the next couple of days the low is in the 20's with a high in the 30's. It's been blistery cold outside for the past couple of months but we are surviving! Thankfully we have had church activities and play groups scheduled for our girls which allows us to get out and about most days.

And on to one of my quick and easy projects that I completed a few weeks ago.

Seriously, it didn't take long to do this one but it added a bit of punch to my oldest's bedroom.

I bought this nightstand at one of my favorite thrift store's about a year and a half ago for $9.00.
Yep, 9 bucks people!!!
Woohoo!
It wasn't white when I bought it...I painted it once we got it home and it looked much better.
I also spray painted the handle in a metallic bronze color and wanted to add more color to it.
So I busted out some left-over paint from a project I completed earlier in the year, Sherwin Williams Coral, and painted the inside.

We use it to store our kids' puzzled and things and it works perfectly.
I haven't styled the top or inside because it's in our daughter's bedroom and she would just play with whatever is on top anyways, so keeping things practical and functional in here wins over styling things sometimes.

I know it is a simple project, but again, sometimes it's the little things that can make a big impact.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you can stay warm!

Tall Painted Dresser with Casters

Hello!
Happy Monday!

So my title may sound familiar to some of you that have been reading my blog because I have blogged about this piece before.

Ya, I know! Already....I changed the paint color on our thrifted vintage dresser.

Why?

Well, I want to sell it in the future so I painted it a medium to light gray color and added some molding to the bottom that I painted as well to make it more universal for most places. A few months ago I posted a dresser for sale on Craigslist and it sold pretty quickly. I really like taking older pieces from thrift stores and giving them new life a new look so they can be sold....and then I can do it all over again. :)

Here is how the vintage dresser looks now as it sits beautifully near our entryway.

The knobs are original and I love them so!
They work so beautifully with the gray paint color.
