Boy's Room Nursery Ideas

I've been wanting to make over my son's room for a little while now and got to Pinning away some ideas on a board...but then everything just kind of stalled. I have the paint colors picked out and ready to go actually, but I'm not sure if I want to just paint the room all one color or add some interest to one wall with stripes or pattern. Here are some inspirational photos I have saved to get me started:

Amazing nursery with Scalamandre Zebra Print wallpapered accent wall features a red Jenny Lind Crib flanked by blue Senegalese hamper baskets and a Melissa & Doug Plush Giraffe atop a brown geometric rug.:
I absolutely love the zebra wallpaper...but not sure I want to spend my time wallpapering his room. ;)

Lovely kid's bedroom features a black industrial bed dressed in pink and blue plaid sheet set, black and white monogram pillow by Jonathan Adler, a navy linen duvet and a navy linen pleated bedskirt placed in front of a window dressed in pink and blue striped curtains.:
The wall of books has always been a go-to of mine and we have one in the reading room...thinking of putting some on one little wall in his room.

Young House Love | A Colorful Door and More Nursery Art | http://www.younghouselove.com:
Loving this pop of color on the closet door...and in green! One of my favorite colors!

Made By Katy: our home:
This room was one of the first Pins I saved to a board and I love pretty much everything about it! The stripes, duvets, and green doors- it all works so well together.

OTHER ROOM, LOVE THE STRIPES AND GRAYS Grey nursery - I would have to add touches of another color but I love the grey striped walls!:
So this room is a little dark for me, but I like the wide stripes on the wall.

Fair Black And White Striped Lamp Shades Decor Ideas in Nursery Contemporary design ideas with Fair blue chevron throw pillow childrens room elephant gray walls ideas for baby:
I know this is a girl's nursery, but what I like about it is the one wall of stripes and the pretty solid blue wall color on the rest of the walls. This is probably another one of my top favorite rooms.

Grey Stripes Baby Room Idea:
This room says "classy" to me. I like the neutral stripes, the use of patterns and even the pops of yellow.

So who knows how I will exactly end up decorating and styling his room, but I have to say I'm pretty excited to get started...whenever that will be! :) Thankfully there is some great inspiration out there to help me out!!

Wood Trim Vs. Painted Trim

I have seen so many pictures out there of painted wood trim...I did it in our home to most of our trim. However, there is something special about leaving wood trim unpainted that I really like. When we bought our home a year ago, more than half of our downstairs had wood trim. The trim in the rest of the house had already been painted over with with white. Since it felt that our home seemed a little mismatched for having part wood trim and white trim, I went ahead and painted most of our wood trim white so our home had better flow. I didn't end up painting our doors and trim in the kitchen and our fireplace trim (as you can see from the photo above) because I knew the wood trim would add warmth and would look visually appealing.

A new trend that is out there at the moment though is painting the trim in your home black instead of white. I admit, I do like the look when it is done right, but I don't think I could paint all of the trim in our home black. Ever. (ok, never say never, but it seems like a bit much to me) However, some of these photos below are quite inspirational because only some of the trim has been painted black and it's got me thinking about painting over the wood in our home.
But don't worry, that hasn't happened and probably won't.  ;)
My husband can now breathe a sigh of relief!

It does look very classy especially when it is paired with white cabinets or surrounding white trim.
But here is why I love what we have going on in our home.

To me, leaving wood trim left unpainted like this adds warmth and depth to a space instead of feeling like you are swimming in a see of white trim everywhere. It gives your eyes a place to rest.

What do you think? Do you prefer one look over the other?

Wall Art Ideas for the Guest Room

I am currently in the process of making over our small guest room.
I haven't actually measured the rooms dimensions, but you can fit a full bed, narrow dresser, and 2 nightstands....that is basically all...which really is quite alright seeing that it is a guest room and there isn't much need for anything else in there anyways.

Anyhow, little progress has been made over the past couple of months to our guest room,  so I would like to get it done before baby #3 arrives...which doesn't leave much time. So some inspiration wall art using wooden boards is what I have been searching for and found a few that I really like. Maybe one of them will make the cut. ;)

I have been wanting to add some rustic elements to the space, so I think I am going to DIY something similar using fence boards. Here are some more ideas:

There are many other ideas out there, but you get the idea.

Hoping to make a decision soon and get the supplies so I can get started on this! I'm excited to see it all come together!

Girls Bedroom Progress

Well, the girl's bedroom is almost done...I figured it would be good to post about the progress made in there so far and I will add the details about the room progress at the end of this post.

I will start with some pictures first. :)

I have been waffling back and forth about curtains for the windows. I was thinking of either white or pink ones to replace the ones in there already because they are just make-shift curtains right now made from a bed sheet. :)
I asked the girls about which color they would prefer, and of course the answer was "Pink"! So I am giving it some thought...IKEA sells the ones they like, but I'm not sure we will be able to make a trip up there anytime soon.

The nightstands were moved from our room to here.  They fit perfectly in here and the girls love them. It's funny, because my youngest keeps trying to pull the handles to "open" the drawers to the nightstand, but it still hasn't completely clicked with her that the handles are just for decoration. There actually isn't a drawer. hehe!

The girls also want the walls painted pink...but if we actually do that, I think I can only handle a VERY pale pink wall color. Especially if we end up getting pink curtains...pink walls on top of that might be overkill. And I want this to be a room that will grow with them as well...not one where there has to be a drastic change every few years.

I think the picture above is one of my favorites!
And you can see that our younger daughter's bed (the one on the far right) is lower than the other bed...that is because we haven't put the bed frame on the bed yet. She is still a little young, and although she hasn't fallen out of the bed, we just want to be safe. So we have it sitting pretty low for her right now.

Source list:

Wall color- Was here when we moved it- but it is a light creamy, yellowy off-white.
Bed Spread and pillow covers- A gift from my mom and purchased at Ollie's
Nightstands- Thrift store find
Lamp- Outlet Store in Williamsburg
Frames and pictures- Gifts from grandparents
Basket- Thrift store find
Bell Wreath on Door- Another thrift store find :) Once the girls saw it, they "just had to have it"
Mirrors on wall- Target

**I would still love to also get a rug for this room to put between there beds to add a little more texture and color- but there is no rush for it so I am taking my time finding one.

That's the tour of their room for now. As we make more progress in here, I will post and share pictures.
Have a great rest of the weekend everyone!!

Benjamin Moore's Moonshine

Well, I finally think I can get around to thinking about paint colors for our family room and kitchen. Those areas all flow together because it is one big space and I want to keep the colors neutral in there but also keep them similar. Here is a reminder of how those 2 rooms flow together.

I am still not 100% sure of the colors I will use for the upper walls and the lower walls but I have an idea...that is one step closer to knowing what will go on the walls right? ;)

I was thinking of painting the upper walls in Benjamin Moore's Moonshine. I know it is a hot color right now...so many people are using it which is why I wanted to stay away from it for so long, but every time I saw the paint chip and looked at pictures online, I kept going back to it. So it is a strong contender. The other color I was thinking about was Gray Owl, also by BM, but I really don't think it will look right in those two spaces.

For the bottom walls I think I am going to use Sherwin Williams Shoji White. It is on the same color palette as the color Intellectual Gray I used in our dining room and the color I used on our kitchen cabinets...so that should flow well no problem. I am pretty sure I will use that color on the bottom half of the walls in these two rooms.

Since I am not 100% sure if I will be keeping the wood trim as is in here either, I wanted to use colors that would work with wood trim and white trim...and these 2 colors seem to me to be the perfect choice for that. We will see...I really don't usually buy paint samples and put them up on the walls because that method just never really worked well for me in the past. I think it is important to test out colors though if you are thinking about painting and aren't sure what color to go with because colors look different on paint chips in the store, in different lighting, and on the internet....I know I am being contradictory here but I don't think I will be testing paint colors....maybe it is because I can be pretty lazy too. ;) Yeah, that may be a BIG part of it!

Anyways, here are some pictures of BM Moonshine on the web I found that I really like.

Overall, it is a very subtle color but we don't get a tremendous amount of light in the family room so I am hoping it will be a tad darker than some of these images show it to be.

Also, it looks like it plays well with wood trim, white trim, and pretty much any color.

Who knows when I will actually get time to paint but hoping by the end of the year? ;)

Thanks for stopping by!

Intellectual Gray by Sherwin Williams

Today's post title is a bit weird, but I will explain.
Ever since we moved in to our new place, I have been wanting to paint a few of our walls a neutral gray. I know gray is pretty popular now, but I used it in our last home in our master bedroom and LOVED it! Plus, a lot of what I wear is gray/black/white and green, so it makes sense to decorate using those colors in our home.

I am pretty sure I know what color I am painting our dining room and our family room and kitchen area...but I am waiting for Sherwin Williams to have another great sale since that is where I get my paint colors from anyways. They are so great and their colors last a long time. The one color I have fallen in love with is Intellectual Gray. I have only seen it used a few times on other blogs, but that is fine with me...I don't want to use what everyone else is using for their wall color- if that makes any sense. To be consistent, I am using mostly this color swatch for our home...with a few exceptions thrown in there like our laundry room and mudroom. More to come on those later!

Anyways, I was able to find a few inspirational pictures out there of this beautiful gray and I am pretty sure it will be going on the upper walls of our dining room. I can't wait!!

Styling a Buffet Table/Sideboard

One piece of furniture we bought at a thrift store a couple of years ago was a wooden buffet table.
It was in GREAT shape...but a little outdated.

I can't find a picture of what it looked like when we bought, but it was just all made out of wood.
I love natural wood furniture pieces, but this kind didn't go with our decor and so I wanted to paint it.

I first started by priming the piece, which was not all that fun because of the intricate details on the front doors. Needless to say, it took some time and patience.
After that was done, the buffet table was ready for some paint.
I chose Nuance, by Sherwin Williams.
I love this color- it's a great off-white with just a hint of gray.

After painting, it was time to style...my favorite part!

This piece is no longer available to buy, but we are on the hunt for another one soon! :)

Some tips for styling a buffet table/sideboard:

1. Lamps are a great accessory and provide extra lighting. I chose a green base lamp from Target since green is one of my favorite colors.
2. Layer mirrors together- seems to be a timeless design trick and it looks beautiful.
3. Don't be afraid to add some contrast above your buffet table with a printed pattern or paint- especially if your piece is a neutral color like mine.
4. Add a few more accessories of your liking to personalize.

And that's all!
I hope you enjoyed this post.

Decor for a Wooden Writing Desk

About a month ago, I visited one of my favorite thrift stores and found this beautiful wooden desk. It needed a bit of cleaning up, but the overall condition was great and I loved the shape of the legs and detail it had.
The inside of the drawers was already lined with this beautiful yellow floral paper- which was a pleasant surprise!

I couldn't pass it up- and now it sits in our home by the top of the stairs and holds a few things for us.

I took some pictures of it recently after selling this piece a while back.
Here is the updated look to give you an idea of how beautiful some pieces can be without paint!!

You can read all about the ruler growth chart I made for our girls here. They love it and it was such a quick and simple project to do!

The paint color on the door is Sherwin Williams Porpoise.
Wall color is Sherwin Williams Wool Skein.

How do you feel about painting furniture? Do you find it hard to paint pieces that have a story and are made well?
